Skate Center West

Skate Center West is a roller skating rink located in Murfreesboro, TN.  It is a large sunken rink with no handrails.  (I think handrails must be a thing of the past for skating rinks.  I’m going to miss them.)   They do have the small skating assist devices for beginners though so don’t worry!

The exterior of the building is unassuming to say the least.  But go on in!  Skate Center West is located in a small strip mall. There is plenty of parking so you should have no trouble in that regard.  The entrance is a small area where you will pay for admission and skate rental (if you need it) before entering the actual rink. Once inside, you will want to head to your right if you need to rent skates. The skate rental area is on the far side of the building.  Along the way you will pass a large variety of arcade style games. These games take tokens and pay out tickets for winnings. Once you have your skates, there are plenty of spots to sit down and change. There are lots of padded benches and low, round seats to sit and relax on while the kids skate.  The opposite side of the rink is one long bench.  I think this is for skaters who don’t want to sit with their parents 😉  You will also find lockers in this part of the rink if you need a place to store your stuff.

On the opposite side of the rink, you will find the skate shop, redemption area for game tickets and the concession stand.  Food and drink are only allowed in the concession area.  There are several long tables here to sit and enjoy your snacks.  The restrooms are located in this spot too. One of the nice things about this rink is that they do a lot of their games (limbo, etc) in the middle of the rink and leave the rest open for skaters who aren’t interested in playing the games. We visited on a school holiday and the place was packed with kids. But the actual rink is so large that it didn’t seem overcrowded . The music was standard pop/top 40 songs. It was played at a normal sound level.  We were able to have a conversation without yelling over the music.  The lighting in the rink varied from song to song.

Skate Center West is generally open on Tuesday evenings and all weekend. The full schedule is at this link. They are also available for birthday parties.   Remember, they often have special open skate times on school holidays so check the website the next time you have a day off and the urge to do some skating. And don’t forget!  This center participates in the Kid’s Skate Free program.
