Old Fort Park has been open since 1977 but has undergone several renovations since then.  The park covers over 50 acres.

If you drive in through the main entrance, the Kid’s Castle Playground will be on your left.  There are plenty of parking spaces on the right in front of the baseball fields.

If you continue through the park, you will find Fortress Rosecrans. Fortress Rosecrans is a historical site built in 1863 during the civil war. But honestly, your more rambunctious kids will probably enjoy just running around it.  It’s a nice walk around the fortress and there are many natural features to see but don’t go expecting an in depth educational experience.

The entrance to the city’s greenway is also located in this area and it’s a great place to run, walk or jog.  Past the greenway entrance is the Old Fort Golf Course.

The Kid’s Castle Playground is probably the most popular spot in Old Fort Park.  This playground was completely rebuilt in 2012 and offers lots of fun choices for your little ones.

There are lots of slides and swings and plenty of structures to climb.  The surface is covered with a soft material to minimize injury from falls.  There are some seating areas for adults but you may have a hard time finding a spot on a day when the weather is good.

Directly behind the playground is a building with restrooms.  These were clean and well stocked during our visit.  Changing tables are available.  There is also a water fountain in this building.  All that climbing and swinging and sliding can make a kid thirsty!

Old Fort Park features several pavilions and areas to rent for private events.  Rental information is available at this link.  There are also picnic tables scattered around the playground.  It’s the perfect place to have lunch during a beautiful play day.
