Nashville Children’s Theatre’s newest production is Mockingbird, based on the book by Kathryn Erskine. I saw a preview scene at the beginning of the season and this show really intrigued me. It is the story of an eleven year old girl with Asperger’s syndrome, who’s older brother, Devon, was her gateway to the world. This all changed when Devon was killed in a school shooting leaving Caitlin confused and wanting life to go back the way it was.
This timely production is geared toward older children. The theatre has provided a parents’ guide so you can decide if this production is a good fit for your child. I know that my middle schooler will have lots of questions after seeing it, which I hope will open the door to discussing how he feels about what is happening at schools in America.
“So often in TYA we tell stories that are ‘Once upon a time,’ but in this particular play we’re talking about right now,” says NCT Executive Director Ernie Nolan. “It’s astonishing to think that we are literally responding to what is going on in schools across the country right now. And we are providing young people with a discussion starter for what goes on in their lives and their personal journey. What I love about this play is that the main character has obstacles from the get-go, and we’re following her as she learns what it means to literally discover empathy. Beyond that, our audiences will sit in the theater and have their own empathetic journey with this play.”
