Last year Microsoft opened a retail store in The Mall at Green Hills. Not only can you buy Microsoft products, you can also get FREE tech help and take free classes. This includes classes for kids and their popular YouthSparks Camp program.

Sign Up for FREE Microsoft YouthSparks Summer Camps

YouthSparks workshops are offered year round, and give kids an opportunity to spend a few hours on a specific topic including coding, graphic design, gaming and more. There are some YouthSparks camps that are one day 2 hour workshops, but there are others that are 4 days long and last 2 hours per day and the best part is all YouthSparks camps are FREE! Keep in mind, an adult has to stay in the store while your child participates in a camp, but there are comfortable chairs and I bring a book.

The 2018 camp program launches June 4, 2018 and offers almost daily options through August 10. The topics include:

Two Hour Workshops

Beginners fun with computers and coding (ages 6 to 8) – students will learn the basics about how computers work and have fun with hands-on introductory coding activities.

Get creative with 3D in Windows 10 (ages 8 -12, ages 13+) Bring your imagination to life by learning Paint 3D in Windows 10.

Hour of Code Minecraft 90-minute workshop (ages 8+) Go behind the scenes to learn how to code, program, and play in your own Minecraft world. You’ll use fun, interactive coding to learn how creativity and problem-solving come together to make something all your own.

Make your own story with PowerPoint and Word (ages 6 – 8) learn how to create and tell a story using Microsoft PowerPoint and Word. They will explore using drawing tools, selecting and sizing images and icons, creating backgrounds, and changing fonts. Activities will focus on learning through hands-on guided experiences and collaborative learning in small groups.

Play and MakeCode with Minecraft (ages 8+) Play in Minecraft while they learn how to code with the Microsoft MakeCode platform.They will program an Agent robot to complete challenges and even change the weather, or as they say in the world of Minecraft: they’ll make it rain ocelots and wolves!

 

Four Day Camps

Make your own movie with 3D and mixed reality camp (ages 8+) – Create unique movie projects using Microsoft’s latest 3D drawing and movie-making applications. Campers feature each other in the videos alongside 3D characters and creatures, while learning movie-making basics like character development, storyboarding, shooting, editing, and sharing.

Code a talking robot with Ohbot (ages 8+) – Learn basic skills in robotics and coding using the Ohbot robot. Students use the Ohbot app for Windows 10 as a group, in pairs, and individually, and also create code that makes the robot move and speak. .

Create a difference in your world  (Ages 8+) – Campers will research and identify a cause they care about in their local community, and create action plans to fundraise, volunteer, or get the word out about their personal cause.

Minecraft coding – learn computer science with your favorite game (ages 8+) Learn key fundamentals of computer programming with Minecraft, using the Microsoft MakeCode platform.

Start your own business (ages 8 – 12) Turn your passion into a great entrepreneurial business idea. Participants get guidance developing their ideas into a robust business plan and a polished pitch ready to share with the world.

Get Creative with 3D in Windows 10 (ages 8 to 12) – Learn the new Paint 3D in Windows 10 and create a group story illustrated with the participants 3D art.
