Long Hunter State Park

Long Hunter State Park is located on Percy Priest lake in Hermitage, TN. This address is deceptive though as the park lies between Mt Juliet and Antioch. It’s easy to find though so don’t worry! There is lots to do here.  So plan a whole day to experience this park or, if you live close, steal away for an hour or two and enjoy just a few activities.

The 4 areas of Long Hunter State Park

Long Hunter State Park is comprised of 4 sections (Couchville, Baker’s Grove, Bryant Grove and Sellars Farm) and encompasses over 2600 acres. Hiking is one of the main attractions here. This map shows all of the trails. There are over 25 miles of hiking trails so whether you are looking for a challenging hike or a leisurely stroll, you will find it at Long Hunter. Looking to camp?  Backcountry camping is permitted for a fee.

Located on two Lakes

Long Hunter is located on two lakes. Percy Priest lake on it’s border and Couchville Lake is located inside the park. Couchville Lake is much smaller and does not allow watercraft with gas motors. Both of these bodies of water provide lots of opportunity for family fun!  If you are looking to fish, there are lots of places to wet your line throughout the park. If you prefer to enjoy the lake from a boat, there are 2 ramps within the park to launch. Maybe you love to kayak or canoe?  Long Hunter has you covered. There is even a place to rent boats and kayaks in the summer months.

Couchville Bluff

One of my favorite parts of Long Hunter is the Couchville Bluff area.  It’s just this massive rock formation that hangs over the lake.  The pictures don’t do this place justice.  You definitely need to experience it in person.  But be careful!  The area is not easy to navigate.  I wouldn’t attempt it with very young children.  I also think this would make a great backdrop for a photo shoot for seniors, engagements, etc.

Long Hunter also offers 2 covered picnic shelters. These are available to rent and are a great option for birthday parties, family reunions, etc. If you have younger kids, make a trip to the playground! Or grab the swimsuits and spend an afternoon splashing around on the sandy beach at Bryant’s Grove. Pack a picnic to complete a fun afternoon at the lake!
