Huntsville Museum of Art

There’s always something new to see at Huntsville Museum of Art. Located in downtown Huntsville, Alabama this museum is full of interesting pieces and collections.  And it’s also a great option for some family fun.

As you enter the museum, there is a desk front and center for you to pay your admission.  The museum store is on your right and the bathrooms are on the left. The museum store has some really unique items but it is small so I wouldn’t suggest taking little kids inside.

The first galleries you will enter feature a travelling exhibition. Check the website as you plan your trip because many of the exhibits change frequently throughout the year. This is what I love about art museums. There is always something new to see!  When we visited, the Red Clay Survey was on exhibit. This is one of the most prestigious art shows in the South and six large galleries were filled with artwork in all kinds of mediums. My ‘arty’ step-daughter could not get enough of it.

In the Shields Gallery, a permanent exhibition of silver is displayed. The Huntsville Museum of Art has the largest collection of  this kind created by the Buccellati jewelry firm. I have included a few pictures but the detail on these pieces demands an up close inspection.

The Baker Gallery holds a permanent collection of American Studio Glass. My kids were fascinated by this exhibit. Luckily they are old enough to know not to touch. The pieces would be tempting to little hands though so keep that in mind if you take smaller children.

The Stender Interactive Gallery holds the “Walk Through Time” exhibit. This is a great area for children. There is lots to see and do as you walk through this space.

If you are visiting the Huntsville Museum of Art with kids then the Education Gallery is going to be the highlight of your trip. There are lots of hands on stations to explore. I visited with teenagers and I had to drag them away from this room!

The Huntsville Museum of Art offers lots of art classes and workshops for kids and adults. They also host many special events throughout the year so be sure to check their website when planning a trip.

The museum has many beautiful things to see inside. But don’t miss the gorgeous views from the museum. This location is downtown and is right in front of a nice park area that would be perfect for a picnic (or just to let the kids run around after being quiet museum patrons for an hour!)

While you are in Huntsville, spend an afternoon at Burritt on the Mountain, or explore the Historic Huntsville Depot.
