Naturalist BioBlitz 2020 – Winter Observations

January 31, 2020 @ 1:30 PM - 3:30 PM

$7.32

January 31, 2020

1:30pm – 3:30pm

Tennessee State Park boasts 56 parks across all the grand divisions of Tennessee. From our rich forests in the east, our limestone glades in the middle and our cypress swamps and wetlands of the west; these parks protect a diverse array of habitats and numerous plant and animal species – including Bicentennial Capitol Mall. The Mall is an arboretum and a certified wildlife habitat. This year, we launch our second annual bioblitz! Help us inventory all the diversity that makes our state and our park so unique and special.

About iNaturalist: Have you ever been on a hike or even in your own back yard and wondered what plant or animal you’re looking at? Well, the iNaturalist application is here to help! iNaturalist has created an online community of over a million naturalists from across the globe! Users can make observations, identify or verify others’ observations, and discuss findings – all on the app!

About the BioBlitz:

Participants will meet at the park’s visitor center. From there, Ranger Wayne will assist everyone in setting-up their iNaturalist account and joining the Tennessee State Parks Bio Blitz project (if you want a head start, feel free to follow the link and download the app!). You’ll also get a laminated field guide of your choice that pertains to wildlife or plants you may encounter around Tennessee!

  • Please note that a smartphone, location permission, and data connection/usage are required to fully use the application.

Once everyone is set-up, we’ll head outside and go over how to make observations or even identify someone else’s observations. Then, we’ll explore the park, cataloguing and virtually catching all the various flora and fauna the park has to offer!

***Please dress appropriately and comfortably for walking and spending over an hour outdoors.***

Finally, once we’re done exploring, everyone is invited over to the Farmer’s Market food court for lunch on your own and further conversations.

All participants are invited to attend Spring, Summer, and Fall BioBlitzes throughout the year!
