Mourning at the Mansion

October 19, 2021 @ 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM

|Recurring Event (See all)

An event every week that begins at 10:00 AM on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, repeating until October 29, 2021

Visit Oaklands Mansion from October 19th until October 29th and experience macabre traditions surrounding death in Murfreesboro in the 19th century. The lights are low, mirrors are draped in somber black fabric, and a coffin stands quietly in the parlor awaiting grieving mourners… You can almost hear a funeral dirge playing faintly in the distance!
Self-guided experiences are offered during museum hours, Tuesdays through Fridays to small groups of 20 guests or fewer. The mansion is open on the hour at 10:00, 11:00, 2:00 and 3:00 each day.
“Oaklands is the perfect example of a hands-on teaching tool. These rotating exhibitions allow us to alternately show the joy and the pain experienced at Oaklands. Exploring the mourning customs of the past, allows us to understand what a drastic cultural change our society has experienced regarding the loss of a loved one,” says James Manning, Executive Director of Oaklands Mansion.
Oaklands Mansion is nestled in Oaklands Park, Experience a native tree arboretum, natural wetlands which include Maney spring, and charming gardens.
