Nashville is home to a ton of great theatre groups.  And there is no better time to see a show than during the holiday season.  There are so many choices! From Broadway style musical productions to small community plays, you are sure to find something your family will enjoy.  

Plan a date night or a family outing.  And if you are having out of town guests, a night at the theatre can be a great way to show off our hometown talent. Make plans in advance as lots of these production will sell out early. Not all of these shows are family friendly so make sure you read the description before making plans.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory – Nashville Children’s Theatre (Map) November 4 – December 17, 2023

Based on the beloved novel by Roald Dahl, the world-famous Willy Wonka is opening the gates to his mysterious factory…but only to a lucky few. Young Charlie Bucket and four other golden ticket winners will embark on a life-changing journey through Wonka’s world of pure imagination including chocolate waterfalls, nutty squirrels and the great glass elevator, all to be revealed by Wonka’s army of curious Oompa-Loompas. This TYA world premiere features an original score and lyrics by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman (Hairspray) as well as songs from the beloved 1971 film picture including “Candy Man,” “I’ve Got a Golden Ticket,” “Oompa Loompa Song,” and “Pure Imagination.”

The Winter Wonderettes Hendersonville Performing Arts Company – (Map)  November 30 – December 17, 2023

It’s Christmas 1968 and the “The Marvelous Wonderettes” are entertaining at the annual Harper’s Hardware Holiday Party. When Santa is a no-show, this fabulous and funny quartet of women use their talent and creative ingenuity to save the holiday party.

Featuring sparkling, iconic 1960s versions of holiday classics such as “Santa Claus is Comin’ to Town,” “Jingle Bell Rock,” “Winter Wonderland,” and more, this show is an energetic and glittering holiday package guaranteed to delight audiences of all ages!

A Christmas Carol – Nashville Repertory Theatre – Polk Theater TPAC(Map) December 1 – December 17, 2023

In this new, heartwarming, and spectacular production of A Christmas Carol, Artistic Director Micah-Shane Brewer brings Charles Dickens’ classic story to life on stage. Join the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future as they lead the miserly prosperous curmudgeon Ebenezer Scrooge on a journey of transformation and redemption. Through these encounters, Scrooge learns the true meaning of Christmas and the importance of kindness and generosity. The production features stunning sets and costumes that transport the audience to Victorian England, and the timeless story is sure to be loved by audiences of all ages.

Irving Berlin’s White ChristmasThe Center for the Arts Murfreesboro (Map) December 1-17, 2023

Veterans Bob Wallace and Phil Davis have a successful song-and-dance act after World War II. With romance in mind, the two follow a duo of beautiful singing sisters en route to their Christmas show at a Vermont lodge, which just happens to be owned by Bob and Phil’s former army commander. This iconic show features a dazzling score of well-known standards including “Blue Skies,” “I Love A Piano,” “How Deep Is the Ocean” and the perennial title song, White Christmas.
Based on the 1954 Paramount movie, Irving Berlin’s White Christmas is a musical for all ages and is sure to get you in the Christmas spirit.

Anastasia – The Musical- Audience of One Productions @ The Capitol Theatre (Map) November 30 – December 10, 2023

Inspired by the beloved films, ANASTASIA transports us from the twilight of the Russian Empire to the euphoria of Paris in the 1920s, as a brave young woman sets out to discover the mystery of her past. Pursued by a ruthless Soviet officer determined to silence her, Anya enlists the aid of a dashing conman and a lovable ex-aristocrat. Together, they embark on an epic adventure to help her find home, love, and family.

With its opulent settings, dazzling costumes, and a soaring score including the song favorites from the hit animated film, “Journey to the Past” and “Once Upon a December,” ANASTASIA is the spectacular new musical about discovering who you are and defining who you’re meant to be.

Anastasia is a musical play with music and lyrics by Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty, and a book by Terrence McNally. Based on the 1997 animated film of the same name, the musical adapts the legend of Grand Duchess Anastasia Nikolaevna of Russia, who could have escaped the execution of her family.

It’s a Wonderful Life – Live Radio Play – Studio Tenn @ Turner Theater (Map) December 7- 24,2023

Middle Tennessee’s newest holiday tradition is back. Studio Tenn is delighted to revive our critically acclaimed production of It’s a Wonderful Life, A Live Radio Play for the second year. The holiday classic is set on a snowy Christmas Eve inside a local radio station which features a multi-talented ensemble of five actors who bring to life every heartwarming character, the iconic town of Bedford Falls, and the story of an idealistic George Bailey as he considers the course his life has taken up to this one fateful night. Nashville’s Nutcracker – Jackson Hall@ TPAC (Map) December 8-24, 2023

Inspired by the 2020 Emmy Award-winning film and named the Best Dance Production of 2022 by Broadway World Nashville, this is Nashville’s can’t-miss holiday event. A uniquely Nashville Ballet rendition of the timeless classic, Nashville’s Nutcracker features original choreography by Artistic Director Emeritus, Paul Vasterling, stunning costumes and sets, live music by the Nashville Symphony, and plenty of holiday magic for the whole family to enjoy!
