Auntie Claus at the Nashville Children's Theatre

When my older kids, now 21 and 20, were tiny, Auntie Claus was one of our favorite books to read at Christmastime. I was ridiculously excited when Nashville Children’s Theatre announced Auntie Claus as their holiday production. Now I had a perfect opportunity to introduce my grandson to this story.

Synopsis of Auntie Claus

There’s something mysterioso about Sophie Kringle’s glamorous great aunt. She serves Christmas cookies at teatime, even in July! Her penthouse at the Bing Cherry Hotel glitters with Christmas lights all year long. There’s also that secretive “business trip” every year around the holidays. Determined to get to the bottom of Auntie Claus’ eccentric ways, Sophie embarks on an adventure that leads straight to the heart of the holidays.

A world premiere holiday musical event for the whole family commissioned for Nashville audiences by award winning writing team Marcy Heisler and Zina Goldrich (Netflix’s Julie’s Green Room, Ever After, Junie B. Jones).

Our Experience

I was a bit concerned about my theatre companion. Kayden is 5 and can be a bit high spirited. (That’s grandma speak for he can’t sit still and has zero attention span.) I reasoned that Nashville Children’s Theatre expects kids to not act like perfect adult theatre goers and, in a worst case scenario, I could always just excuse us from the performance. We arrived about 15 minutes before the performance which gave Kayden ample time to participate in some of the pre show activities in the lobby but not enough time to get bored or fidgety.

He was so excited to see a live show and Auntie Claus did not disappoint! Once the performance began, he was completely engaged. Auntie Claus is full of high energy musical performances. The plot moves quickly and the dialogue was humorous and easy to understand. The show runs about 75 minutes.

I’m always impressed by the caliber of the actors at Nashville Children’s Theatre. Megan Murphy Chambers as Auntie Claus and Rebecca Keeshin as Sophie were standouts. And if you are a fan of costumes, Auntie Claus’ wardrobe will delight you.

Make plans to take your family to see this wonderful performance during the holiday season. Take your old kids. Take your young kids. Take everybody!
