Captain’s Quarters Resort – The Myrtle Beach Destination for Family Fun

Recently, Vacations Myrtle Beach invited us to come experience Myrtle Beach and stay in the Captain’s Quarters Resort. I lived in South Carolina many years ago and spent some time in the area, so I was really excited to visit again, and share the fun with my family. I was amazed by how much it has changed and how much there is to do! There are lots of attractions and family fun restaurants to visit, but you could easily spend several days enjoying the beach and amenities at the Captain’s Quarter resort and not need to leave.

Captain’s Quarters has Rooms for Families of all Sizes

There are 21 different room types available to choose from in the main building of the resort as well as 4 different options in the Ocean Inn building that is across the parking lot. Depending on the room size, there are options to sleep up to six comfortably. With the exception of five room types (2 have a view of the pools), all rooms have balconies with a spectacular view of the ocean. Efficiency rooms and suites all include a full kitchenette.

It was cool and rainy the day we arrived in mid-March and our entire visit was unseasonably cold, but as you can see below, the beach view from our balcony was still beautiful and we found plenty of entertainment to make it a great trip!

We stayed in an Angle Oceanfront Suite, which has two rooms, allowing us to put the kids to bed and not have to go to sleep at the same time. The room has a kitchenette including full size refrigerator, microwave, stove, toaster, coffee maker, and basic cookware and dinnerware, so you could bring food and easily prepare some meals in your room.

While “Oceanfront Suite” sounds exclusive and expensive, the Captain’s Quarters resort is remarkably affordable. All rooms, including those in the Ocean Inn building, have access to all the property’s amenities.

Indoor Pools, Hot Tubs, and Lazy Rivers

Never fear if it is too cold to enjoy the outdoor pools and the beach!

Captains Quarters - indoor pool and spa

There is a large indoor area that has more than just an indoor pool. There are two lazy rivers; the larger one is 232 feet long and 4 feet deep, and the other is perfect for the smallest members of the family and is just 1.5 feet deep. There is also a small wading pool located next to the main indoor pool. All of the indoor water areas are heated to a very comfortable 85 degrees. I have been to several indoor water parks and the pools at the Captain’s Quarters resort are the most comfortable I have been in when it is cold outside. For those that like water warmer than 85, there are three indoor hot tubs with plenty of room to relax.

All the rooms on the property have outdoor corridors which did get cold when we visited in March, but we wore our swimsuits under clothes to ride down the elevator and then it was about 50 feet to get to the heated indoor pool space. There are also restrooms where you could change in and out of swimsuits if necessary.

Three Outdoor Pool Areas

There are three different outdoor pool areas on the property, and the main attraction is the Shipwreck Lagoon Kids’ Waterpark. Kids can spend the day splashing in the 1.5 foot deep pool, firing the water cannons, and getting soaked by the large water dumping bucket in the middle of the lagoon. There are plenty of comfortable lounge chairs surrounding the waterpark so Mom and Dad can watch and relax.

In the same area as the Waterpark, there is the Island pool which is a great place to play in deeper water. It has a maximum depth of 4.5 feet. If you want to take a break from swimming, there are lounge chairs on sand that face the ocean along with cornhole sets.

If you want a quieter experience, walk to the Tower Pool that is located next to the large outdoor whirlpool which is open year round.

The third area is only open during the summer and is located across the parking lot at the Ocean Inn.

Great Beach Front Location

The resort is located right on the Atlantic Ocean and has a gate from the pool area directly onto the sand. You can go for a walk and collect shells or spend the day swimming in the waves, with your room only a few hundred feet away.

Restaurants

There are three different food service options at the Captain’s Quarters resort. Vista 9 is located on the ninth floor of the hotel and offers a full hot and cold breakfast buffet. The view of the Atlantic Ocean is spectacular and we even saw dolphin playing and jumping near the beach several different mornings of our stay.

The hotel does offer breakfast and room deals (normally, breakfast is an extra charge). If you get in on a special, make sure that you pick up vouchers for your breakfasts from the hotel lobby. The first two days we stayed we were able to put the breakfast charge on the room; however on the day you check out, you can not add breakfast to your room tab, you much get a voucher the night before to get your free breakfast.

As I mentioned, we visited the resort in March so we were not able to visit the other two restaurants, the Loco Gecko Beach Shak and the Tipsy Turtle Pool Bar. Both are open seasonally in the summer.

Level 6 Entertainment Center

If your family needs a break from the sun, you don’t have to go far. On the sixth floor of the resort is the Level 6 Entertainment Center which has an arcade and full bowling alley with 20 lanes. One game of bowling is included daily for each member of your party. Shoe rental is $4.00. There are plenty of new bowling balls available starting at six pounds ranging up to sixteen pounds. Bumpers can be set up electronically for each bowler.

There is also an arcade that has all our family’s favorites. Compete and see who comes in first in the racing game Cruis’n’ Blast. Hunt some dinosaurs playing the Jurassic Park Jeep game; and see who has the best moves on the Dance, Dance, Revolution dance pad. There are also games to win tickets and redeem them for prizes including skeeball.

When you start planning your next summer vacation, consider doing something different and spend a week at the Captain’s Quarters in Myrtle Beach. Your family is sure to have a great time and come home relaxed! While you are in the area, consider visiting Myrtle Beach Safari and get up close with baby tiger cubs.
